Toll Becomes Third Player In Parcels Market
September 10th, 2009
Toll NZ has taken on Freightways and Courier Post in the parcels market, where trading is already being squeezed by the economic downturn. Toll has rolled out 55 trucks and vans, only a fraction of Courier Post’s 650, and Freightways’ 500. The Aust company which sold KiwiRail back to the Govt in 2008, aims to leverage its Tranzlink fleet of over 500 heavy truck and trailer units, NZ’s largest, to extend its reach in parcel delivery.
Toll NZ general manager Greg Miller says market conditions are tough. “We’re all talking it up but it hasn’t translated into volume increase or trade sale pick-up.” Miller predicts the industry faces a difficult Christmas without the peaks of previous years. Speculation about Toll’s motives has included a possible takeover attempt on Freightways, which has a fairly open share register. Miller says the launch of Toll IPEC is a response to demand from existing customers for a better inter-city parcel express consignment service. “The feedback we’ve had is service isn’t as good as it could be – there’s a level of complacency.”
