Ports Of Auckland Focuses On Container Trade

April 10th, 2008

Ports of Auckland is taking steps to cope with booming container trade which is expected to grow more than five-fold to 4.22m TEUs per annum by 2040. The Port Development Plan will focus on optimising capacity through developing new terminal and operating plant and systems while adding additional container handling space through reclamation. The plan makes provision for the port to handle container vessels up to 7000 TEU capacity within the next five years.

The Port has Resource Consent to add a new northern berth and preliminary planning is underway to expand one of the existing inner berths to accommodate vessels up to 14.metres draught. When this project is complete the port will have three container berths which will be able to work four container vessels simultaneously with up to 13 cranes.

Reclamation Boosts Capacity. The 5.8ha Fergusson terminal reclamation is nearing completion and the port intends starting a second 4.6ha reclamation project this year. When this work is complete the port’s capacity will rise to 1.6m TEUs per annum.

The port is not considering boosting rail capacity at the port which at present exceeds volume moved by more than 600% and is confident increased truck volumes can be accommodated by increasing truck movements outside peak handling hours and improving vehicle utilisation at the port.
