Road User Charges overhaul far from over

August 20th, 2009

Transport Minister Steven Joyce says the exempting of electric vehicles from the Road User Charges regime and six weeks notice of changes in the level of the levies are just the start of a broader effort to simplify and modernise the scheme. The biggest leap forward will be in facilitating ERUC, or electronic road user charges, which will allow data on truck movements to be transferred in real time. Joyce says the idea will align with transport companies’ in-house vehicle management systems. There are still thorny issues ahead, with the independent review of RUC finding light diesel vehicle users aren’t contributing as much as large trucks compared with their road usage.
