Ports of Auckland set to benefit shipping changes

July 23rd, 2009

Ports of Auckland says a new consortium of shipping lines comprising Hamburg Sud and Cosco serving the port will boost container traffic. CFO Wayne Thompson says container volumes through Ports of Auckland will benefit from the change.”Ports of Auckland will be a net winner.” In particular, he says the port is excited about forming a closer relationship with Hamburg Sud and Hapag Lloyd. “Both companies will have cargo on this service coming direct into Auckland, where previously it came through Tauranga.”

Thompson says Ports of Auckland’s proximity to the large Auckland market, and to industrial hubs in South Auckland and Penrose, is attractive to businesses moving cargo into and out of the region and freight companies in the current tough economic environment. “It seems that in this instance the recession is working in our favour. We can see a silver lining.” The new weekly service combines Hamburg Sud’s Asia, Aust and NZ Service (ANZL) with the Cosco Container Lines (Coscon) and ICS consortium’s Asia service.
