NZ Exports: Zespri Speeds deliveries to Europe, Asia
March 24th, 2010
Zespri is the first customer of Tokyo-based Fresh Carriers Co to take space in MV Lady Rosebay on its maiden voyage to Zeebrugge in Europe. The company says Rosebay is “one of the fastest ships ever used by Zespri.” Its 6062m3 cargo hold is able to stow about 4700 pallets of kiwifruit, plus a further 100 40 ft equivalent units on deck – space for a further 2000 pallets.
Rosebay joins a fleet with names such as Rose, Rosemary and Lady Rosebud though timing issues mean Rosebay is the first contracted by Zespri. With the 2010 harvest echoing last year’s early start, Rosebay will leave NZ late this month in time to “capitalise on the buzz generated by early season marketing programmes.” The relationship with Fresh Carriers has evolved over 25 years, with the first chart er shipments initially done in partnership with other reefer operators. The shipping company hauls fruit to Japan, Korea, China and Taiwan and recently celebrated the milestone of having shipped more than a quarter of a billion pallets of kiwifruit for the NZ industry to Japan, Asia, Europe and North America.
