Govt Pushes Sea Change at Ports Forum
June 12th, 2008
The Govt’s Sea Change coastal shipping strategy will benefit all NZers in terms of helping reduce greenhouse gases, taking pressure off the country’s roads, and better linking the country’s regions. Associate Transport Minister Harry Duynhoven says sea along with rail, both have a key role in realising the NZ Transport Strategy’s vision of an affordable, integrated, safe, responsive and sustainable transport system.
Sustainability. Sea Change is a key component in NZTS which provides a high-level plan for transport through to 2040 as it plans to increase coastal shipping’s share of inter-regional freight to 30%. Duynhoven says the targets come under the broad goal of ensuring environmental sustainability, which includes halving per capita domestic transport greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. He claims Sea Change has a significant contribution to make in reducing emissions. The Govt expects total domestic inter-regional freight to more than double by 2040. If sea freight increases its share from 15-30% by 2040, in tonne-kilometres this means a four-fold increase in domestic freight moved by ship.
