Govt Change Necessary - Infratil Boss

November 20th, 2008

Leading transport businessman, Lloyd Morrison, says a change of Govt “was really necessary” after what occurred during the last term of the Labour Govt. “Their claim to experience doesn’t relate to the type of environment we’ve got at the moment and it was a wrong time to be having increased bureaucracy layered over the top of people’s decision making. There was a need for fresh thinking.” Morrison says the latest trading period for Infratil has brought a “mixed bag” of regulatory developments he says has been detrimental to Infratil. “In its last days, the Labour Govt drove several pieces of legislation into law that are likely to be subject to improvement once more thoughtful, less urgent, consideration is brought to bear.”

Poor Legislation. He cited a late change to the Public Transport Management Act as one example of poor legislation adversely affecting the transport sector. He claims the Act has resulted in legislation allowing Regional Councils to effectively ban all privately provided public transport. “Unless the law is corrected, [the legislation] will stifle development, investment and new services.” NZ’s airports have “also slipped into being regulated” during the “final burst” of legislation by the outgoing Labour Govt.
