Focus Back On Kapiti Link Road – Joyce

April 9th, 2009

Transport Minister, Steven Joyce, has asked the NZ Transport Agency to go back to first principles on the Western Link Road, the paper route along the Kapiti Coast which has been on the books since the 1950s. Kapiti Coast District Council had downgraded the road project to a two-lane tributary but in a larger form, say four lanes, it has the potential to markedly reduce peak traffic flows on State Highway 1. “I want to see a four-lane corridor that everyone’s signed up to.”

Since Christmas, the NZTA has been trying to shift public debate away from a preoccupation with Transmission Gully to the entire corridor, from Wellington Airport right through to Foxton, north of Levin. And there’s plenty of low-hanging fruit in upgrading the northern end of the route. “That’s what the NZTA is looking into at the moment.” He says there are safety and congestion issues, from Waikanae to Levin. “The real thing people want is projects that improve the whole road.”
