Construction of a 3km rail siding into Fonterra’s new Darfield dairy factory west of Christchurch has begun. The work is expected to be finished in time for trains to run in early January. Work is being carried out jointly by Christchurch and Dunedin track renewals gangs.
Initial work began with pre-boring sleepers and reconditioning second hand turnouts. Acting I&E Southern Regional Manager Neil Campbell says “there’s been a degree of urgency about the project because the siding was planned to be part of the Stage 2 Drier phase of the work, scheduled for August of next year”. The siding will connect the Darfield plant to the Midland Line so milk product can be railed to the Port of Lyttelton.
