Auckland Road Infrastructure: Victoria Park tunnel construction begins
November 19th, 2009
Construction of the Victoria Park tunnel in Auckland has started with the aim of tackling congestion on one Auckland’s busiest stretches of motorway and improving public transport between Auckland City and the North Shore. The 440m tunnel beneath Victoria Park will carry three lanes of northbound traffic and is the final stage of the NZ Transport Agency’s Central Motorway Junction improvements. It will take about three years to complete. The motorway project is the first of the Govt’s seven “roads of national significance” to start.
When the project is completed, southbound motorists will be able to stay in the same lane from the Harbour Bridge to the city, the Southern Motorway or the Northern Motorway, removing the need for merging and lane-changing through St Mary’s Bay. NZ Transport Agency’ spokesman, Wayne McDonald, says the project will also provide a boost for public transport by unlocking the full benefits of the North Shore busway, removing the current pinch point at St Mary’s Bay.
