Ameti Delayed Again As Funding Woes Hit Project

September 25th, 2008

Expanding Auckland’s arterial roading network is becoming more like chasing a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow with the completion date of another major project delayed. The Auckland-Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative (Ameti) – essentially the defunct eastern motorway in drag, is now unlikely to be completed before 2030 , 11 years later than originally scheduled. due to funding concerns. Manukau City Council’s Policy and Activities Committee has received a report from the Ameti Steering Group outlining the latest delays to the plans for the eastern road link. This will run from Manukau through Pakuranga and Panmure to link with Auckland City through Glen Innes.

Budgeting Considerations. The report says delays have been caused by a Land Transport request for a review of works so far, and a longer term delay necessary so the agency’s share of the $1.3bn cost can be adequately incorporated into its long-term budget. Manukau’s share of the cost is expected to be several hundred million dollars. Chairman of the Political Steering Group for the project, Pakuranga Councillor David Collings, says the new delays are largely because of the very high cost of the project. “It’s unfortunate that the project will now go out to 2030 but unless the Govt comes up with more money it seems we will have to go with it.” This situation reflects again the shambolic nature of funding of transport projects in NZ where too many parties are involved and funding streams are uncertain.
